THE WEIGHTS AND MEASURES (REVOCATIONS) REGULATIONS 2015

21 January 2015

The following consultation has been issued “THE WEIGHTS AND MEASURES (REVOCATIONS) REGULATIONS 2015 (A) REPEAL OF THE NATIONAL REGULATIONS IMPLEMENTING SEVEN “OLD APPROACH” DIRECTIVES ON METROLOGY (B) REPEAL OF THE CAPACITY SERVING MEASURES (INTOXICATING LIQUOR) REGULATIONS 1988 (AS AMENDED)

This consultation will have some significance for us as it is suggesting the removal of Regulation 8 of the Non-automatic Weighing Instrument Regulations 2000 (SI3236). This is the regulation which outlines the legal requirements for the weights that we must use to carry out verifications and re-verifications of weighing instruments. It is proposed to replace this with a generic notion that suitable and appropriate equipment must be used and to produce guidance notes as to what may constitute suitable and appropriate equipment.

The UKWF is of the view that the present framework works well and is understood by all businesses operating in the market place. It has provided a transparent benchmark for at least 14 years and we would not advocate the proposed change. It is felt that the concept of suitable and appropriate equipment would lead to confusion and the development of many different views as to which weights could be suitable.

I attach the consultation document for your information. If you have any questions on this please do not hesitate to contact me.
